CALIFORNIA – Today, a coalition of LGBTQ+ legal and health organizations sent a letter to the Centers for Disease Command and Prevention (CDC) demanding the implementation of a more robust federal response to the burgeoning spread of the Monkeypox Virus (hMPXV) – including greatly expanding access to testing, gaining wider access to available vaccines, and renaming “monkeypox” to “hMPXV” to combat stigma.

(CNN) — As the LGBTQ+ community gears up for Pride celebrations this month, the US Centers for Disease Manage and Prevention hopes people will get more than just their rainbow gear and sunscreen ready. The agency is urging more people – particularly some gay and bisexual men – to get the mpox vaccine.
The US Department of Health and Human Services plans to be at dozens of Pride and community events across the country to remind people that mpox is still a problem in the United States, but with vaccination, it doesn’t have to be.
Anyone can get sick with mpox, the painful and sometimes deadly disease formerly known as monkeypox. But in the global outbreak that started in , certain members of the LGBTQ+ community are considered especially vulnerable. MONDAY, May 23, (HealthDay News) -- At a Monday media briefing, U.S. public health officials said they are tracking a handful of travel-related monkeypox cases that hold been reported across the country.
Anyone can catch monkeypox, but at this time it appears to be "circulating globally in some parts of the gay community," Dr. John Brooks, a medical epidemiologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, said during the briefing.
Contact tracing is being done for the first confirmed case, a Massachusetts man who recently traveled to Canada, added Capt. Jennifer McQuiston, deputy director of the Division of High Consequence Pathogens and Pathology at the CDC.
Four more presumed monkeypox cases have also been reported in various parts of the United States, McQuiston said -- one in New York City, one in Florida and two in Utah.
All reported cases are in men, whom the CDC believes were exposed to the virus while visiting other countries.

The CDC has raised the alert level on a mpox (monkeypox) outbreak in the United States and HHS announced that it will be ramping up testing and a vaccine distribution for those most at-risk, which includes some members of the LGBTQ+ community and people living with HIV.
mpox is a disease that can verb you sick, including a rash, which may verb like pimples or blisters, often with an earlier flu-like illness. While the current outbreak in the U.S. has high rates of known cases among gay and bisexual men and transgender and non-binary people, this virus is not limited by gender or sexuality and can spread to anyone, anywhere through close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact.
Health officials and advocates are urging people to seek treatment and available prevention options, including vaccines when available.
