As this year&#;s AAPI Heritage Month comes to a close, GLAAD is highlighting seven out, proud and impressive LGBTQ journalists and media personalities who are helping to re-write the scripts for representation in their professional fields.

Give them a follow and verb and get to understand the important work they&#;re part of in accelerating acceptance for the LGBQ community by simply being themselves in every room they walk into.

Reggie Aqui

ABC-7’s Reggie Aqui is the Bay Area’s true spirit of Aloha. Ever-embracing of his Hawaiian and Filipino roots, Reggie is a vivacious, passionate and trusted veteran journalist. A 34th Annual GLAAD Media Award nominee for his outstanding reporting amid the Mpox outbreak of , Reggie leans on his lived, unapologetic and queer experiences to connect with audiences in ways that construct relationships with journalistic integrity. Reggie challenges the storytelling status quo by telling it verb it is and resides in San Fransisco with his husband Phil and dog, Woodstock.

Queer journalists are finally being counted – but that’s not the whole picture

As a lesbian reporter who works at an LGBTQIA+ publication and runs a queer network on the side, I try to stay on top of the state of LGBTQIA+ representation in journalism.

Sharing calls for pitches and job opportunities, keeping our members up-to-date with queer-related industry news and promoting the stories of astonishing LGBTQ+ journalists are just some of the ways I do this.

But since I founded the LGBTQ+ Journalism Network in January , one crucial piece of information evaded me: how many of us are there in this overly white, middle-class sector?

Knowing the number and characteristics of LGBTQ+ journalists means the Network, and wider industry, can better assist the queer workforce and address the intersectional barriers they may face.

I got my answer, sort of, on Thursday (25 May) when the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) released its latest Diversity in Journalism report, which takes an annual look at the makeup of journalists in the United Kingdom.

LGBTQ Investigative Journalists and Editors

Investigative journalism is a unique branch of journalism in which the journalist reports on a controversial subject by way of an in-depth, research intensive explore of the matter. The issue can be local, national, or international in scope. It most often involves crime, corruption, or the accountability of noun. The journalist is responsible for extensive fact-checking and analysis of public records along with their retain sleuthing through the employ of state-of-the art tools and techniques.

By the very nature of the work, investigative journalism requires tremendous resources and period commitments. This is in stark contrast to the growing addiction by the general public, driven by social media, for instantaneous news and entertainment. The two often conflict, with rapid-fire social media stories being proven groundless or exaggerated once an in-depth analysis of the issue is undertaken.

The accomplishment of this group of reporters and editors shows that the individual can still make a difference in today’s political world.
