Researchers at Bilkent University in Turkey showed men silhouettes of women's bodies and asked to rank them in order of preference. They found that the men were most attracted to women whose spines curved exactly 45 degrees above the top of their butts, but that the men were actually more attracted to the spinal curve — known as vertebral wedging — than the butts themselves. Why? The researchers say that having "extra mass around the buttocks" enhanced the appearance of the curvature.
Dr. David Lewis, one of the researchers on the study, told Daily Mail that vertebral wedging developed out of necessity. But of course, the male obsession with the female butt is nothing new. In fact, it's primal, says David Buss, Ph.D., a psychology professor at the University of Texas at Austin.
Men are drawn to a woman's heinie for the same reason they're attracted to breasts, hips, and a tiny waist: because those traits would have been indicators of fertility to your ancient ancestors, says Buss.
Man evolved to search out women who could procreate, says Buss. If a woman has a full tush, that's a signal to your primitive brain that she's probably carrying enough fat to become pregnant, he says. And if her bum is perky and curved, that means she's probably young—which, in caveman days, would make her a good candidate to bear the cavechild.
