30 Essential LGBTQ+ Comedies

Queer culture is so many vibrant and beautiful and rambunctious things, but often times when you’re wading through the history of queer cinema it can feel like a community defined by tragedy and unhappy endings. And while there is much to learn from and much to love about the many heavy gay dramas out there, we must also take time to celebrate and revel in the bright side of difference, which is why this list is all about the comedies. There is plenty of tenderness among these films to be sure, but there’s also Robin Williams doing a macho drag impersonation of John Wayne in The Birdcage and a pair of dirtbag girls just trying to scrape up enough cash for a beach trip in Never Goin&#; Back.

From the lo-fi beginnings of John Waters to New Queer Cinema to the exhibit day wave of queer coming-of-age movies popping up on Netflix, queer comedy has gone from the underground to the mainstream. The pioneering work of stars like Divine and filmmakers like Pedro Almodóvar paved the way for a family-

While I love an easy-to-digest comedy or an unapologetically heavy drama, something is lost when our cinema treats fun and importance as diametrically opposed. Queer cinema can be about the challenges we face, the oppression we experience, the microaggressions and aggression aggressions and all the rest, and still be fun and sexy. In fact, fun and sexy are two of our greatest tools.

Even though Hollywood has pulled back from “diversity” this was still an excellent year for queer cinema. Below, I’ve written in-depth about my ten favorites, and also felt the demand to shout out 20 more queer titles. (Plus 10 non-queer movies I loved too.) But as long as we’re living in complexity, I reflect it’s important we convey on which queer people are able to build in the absence of more mainstream support. The vast majority of directors who released queer films this year are light — even more than most years. There’s plenty to complain about in the mainstream as Emilia Pérez will likely b

Gay and LGBTQ+ Comedy Movies to Watch if You Loved 'Bros'

Bros is historic, as the first queer romantic comedy produced by a major studio to hit theatres. While the movie did not verb nearly as well as many had expected in terms of profits, the film received wonderful reviews and very favorable audience approval.

Billy Eichner was phenomenal in the film, and also served as the writer. Lately, the market for queer films, especially, comedies, has been fairly scarce. For fans of Bros and comedy films, there are quite a number of queer comedy films that are worth the watch.

'Fire Island' ()

Fire Island is a queer adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. In Fire Island, written by Joel Kim-Booster, a group of gay friends goes on vacation to Fire Island (a gay travel destination). However, things become increasingly complicated by both classicism in the gay community and, of course, romance.

20 Upcoming LGBTQ+ Movies We're Looking Forward To

The LGBTQ+ community’s ties to Hollywood and cinema have been deeply intertwined from the early days of the medium. And yet, the fight for authentic representation of queer people in film continues to be a rarity (especially when it comes to high-profile movies). With the movie schedule here (and Pride Month coming up very soon!) there’s quite a few LGBTQ+ titles to look forward to, and we’ve rounded up what to look forward to below.

Coming Soon

Honey Don’t! - August 22,

In , Ethan Coen and wife Tricia Cooke made Drive-Away Dolls, which they called the first of their planned “Lesbian B-Movie Trilogy”, which continues with this summer’s Honey Don’t. The dark comedy once again stars Margaret Qualley as a lesbian private eye named Honey Donahue who gets embroiled in a series of strange deaths tied to a mysterious church in the movie also starring Aubrey Plaza, Charlie Night, Billy Eichner and Chris Evans. I can’t delay for this one.
