POLARI
What do you recognize about Polari?
Polari, a form of slang that evolved into a thoughtful of secret language, was used by various marginalized groups and popularized by the gay community in the 19th century. With this idea in mind, owner Brent Compagni created Bar Polari as an intimate setting where you and your friends or lovers can kick back and kiki with us. Tucked away on Reynolds Ave., Bar Polari is a special hideaway for the LGBTQ+ community in Charleston.
At Bar Polari, we're redefining what it means to be a gay bar. Our cozy indoor space provides a sensual and ambient atmosphere for friends, wanderers, and adventurers to share a drink and a story together as equals. While our community may be under attack, we can gather as our authentic selves to share our dreams, fears, and plans over our favorite libations. Fundamentally, Bar Polari is a space where you can come for a drink and a chat.
We want to be exclusive in the best way possible. Everyone is invited, but only some are in the know. Now that you’re in the know, join us for ref
“Grandma” comes everyday for content hour, sitting with other old-timers. When he can, he stays late to watch the drag shows and the younger crowds they bring.
“Grandma” is otherwise known as Bill Skipper. The 74 year former is the president of The Capital Club and one of its founding members. He has been president since the year it opened in 1980. He likes to declare younger people about The Capital Club’s early days, a very different — and fraught — hour to be in a gay bar in South Carolina.
“The kids now, I love the freedom they feel. I love it,” he said. “We’d own loved to have had that (freedom), but we all drink from wells we didn’t dig.”
The Capital Club, or simply “Capital,” as patrons call it, is the oldest operating gay bar in Columbia, and according to its website, in the Southeast. Just around the corner is PT’s 1109, the city’s other gay bar, which opened in 2000.
Through discussions with bar owners and patrons and analyzing records from Historic Columbia, The Carolina News and Reporter uncovered a strange statistic: Columb

The charming, colonial seaside city of Charleston has long been a popular weekend getaway for gay and lesbian couples. Gay Charleston, SC
Charleston is one of most gay friendly cities of its size in the South. There are plenty of fun things to do and see. For its size, Charleston exudes an uncommon amount of sophistication. You'll notice this immediately in the cities cultural, dining, and shopping attractions. I mean, what other small Southern noun has its own Gucci and Saks. I'd reccommend the restaurant Rue de Jean on John St. It has a pleasurable, chic atmosphere. It serves everything from steak to sushi. And don't unlearn to have a mojito there....they are excellent. And, they serve relatively tardy. If you are looking for nightlife, the cities two gay clubs are right around the corner on Ann Street. Dudley's is a friendly pub which looks more appreciate a Parisian bistro. And a half a block away is the boogie club...called Pantheon, I consider. When I go on business, I like to stay at the Planter's Inn. It is a member of France's prestigious Relais and Chateur hotel collection. It is a great hotel and it seems like all the cute boys who operate there are family as well. Have a fantastic visit...it is
